Perforated Sheet Hole Patterns: A Guide for Grain Mills

Round, square, slot, hexagonal, herring bone, lip, dimple and indented screens: which perforated sheet pattern suits which grain machine.

Perforated sheets are the working surface of separators, graders, scourers, hammer mills and washers. The hole shape decides what the screen separates and how the grain moves over it.

Sizing and separating

  • Round holes are the most common, used for sizing and separation in pre-cleaners, separators and hammer mill screens.
  • Square holes give a larger open area for the same size.
  • Oblong slots separate grains by thickness.
  • Triangle and hexagonal holes are used for special grading and high open area.
  • Checkboard slots give strength with a good open area.

Scouring and polishing

  • Dimple, lip and indented screens have raised surfaces that rub grain to remove dust and husk.
  • Herring bone slots help move product along the screen.
